A common question is: Where is the Feldberg in the Black Forest? At 1,493 meters, the Feldberg is the highest mountain in Baden-Württemberg and is located in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. It is located around 25 kilometers south-east of Freiburg im Breisgau. Geographically, it belongs to the municipality of Feldberg in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.
Where is the Feldberg in the Black Forest?
The Feldberg in the Black Forest lies in the middle of an impressive mountain landscape. It is surrounded by well-known places:
-
Hinterzarten in the northeast
-
Titisee in the east
-
Menzenschwand and Bernau in the south
-
Todtnau in the southwest
The region is known for its clear mountain air, expansive views and diverse leisure activities.
The highest mountain in the German low mountain range
At 1,494.2 meters, the Feldberg is the highest peak in Baden-Württemberg and also the highest mountain of all the German low mountain ranges. Only in the Alps are there higher elevations in Germany.
The mountain gave the municipality of Feldberg its name. It consists of several peaks and is known as the Feldberg massif. The highest point is the Feldberg summit, which is also known as “the highest”. Other prominent peaks are the Seebuck (1,449 m), the Mittelbuck (1,472 m) and the Baldenweger Buck (1,460 m).
Location of the municipality of Feldberg
The municipality of Feldberg stretches from the Seebachtal valley at an altitude of 848 meters to the 1,494-meter-high Feldberg summit. It therefore covers a considerable altitude profile.
At 1,277 meters, Feldberg-Ort is the highest village in Germany. It lies above the top of the Feldberg Pass (1,231 m) between the Wiesental valley in the south and the Gutachtal valley in the north. The village is located directly south-east below the Feldberg summit and thus in the heart of the Black Forest.
Landscape and valleys
From the Feldberg, deep valleys open up in all directions. To the northwest, the Zastlertal and the St. Wilhelm Valley lead towards Freiburg. To the southwest, the Wiesental extends towards Basel. From the Seebuck, the terrain drops steeply down to the picturesque Feldsee lake.
An ideal travel destination
The Feldberg is a popular vacation destination all year round. In summer, hiking trails, mountain bike trails and views as far as the Alps beckon. In winter, the region is transformed into a winter sports paradise with ski areas and cross-country ski trails.
